The Land of the Sky is a common nickname for this area of the Appalachian mountains, judged to be the oldest in the world.  Buncombe County sits in the central area of a high plateau with Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountain range to the east and the Great Smokies to the west, and where the Swanannoa River and French Broad River converge.  The county is roughly divided by the French Broad River, the 3rd oldest river in the world and one of the few to flow from south to north.  The county seat is Asheville, the largest city in Western NC and sometimes referred to as “the Paris of the South”.  Some people say there’s more to it than the scenery and the climate that draw them here and make them want to stay.  Whatever the reason, from the Native Americans including the Cherokee, to the 1st pioneer William Davidson and to George Vanderbilt and all the “newcomers” since, this place is special.
